Historical part of Betina was established on the small peninsula of Artic. Later, it expanded and merged with the village of Murter. Picturesque harbor of Betina inspired the legend about the origin of its name, according to which Betina is derived from the Celtic word "bet" meaning mouth. Long history of Betina is witnessed by Liburnska Gradina (Liburnian fortress) and the remains of Antique city of Colentum at the bottom of Gradina Hill. The settlement was first mentioned in 1423. Throughout the 15th and the 16th century, the area was inhabited by people from Vrana and Bosnia and Herzegovina who fled from the Turks. Above the old town centre and the streets raises the symbol of the village - Baroque Church of St. Francis of Assisi built in 1601. Wooden shipbuilding has been present in Betina for over 260 years and next to Korcula it is the oldest Adriatic shipbuilding place. This village of caulkers created gajeta of Betina, trawls and tourist boats. Today, the shipyard makes and repairs boats of up to 800 tons. Marina Betina, located on the north side of the island, has 240 wet berths and 100 berths on mainland, and it provides year-round services of safekeeping, maintenance and boat servicing.
