Although a small tourist resort, Gradac is a true gem of the Adriatic, with long history. In Roman times, Gradac area was the seat of the Roman Civitas Biston. In the Medieval times it was mentioned by Byzantine emperor Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus under the name of Labineca. Its current name dates back to the Candian War. It was named after the stronghold that served for the defense of this area. With 1500 inhabitants, Gradac is the largest locality in Municipality Gradac that consists of five villages. The locality by the sea existed in the past, although the majority of people lived at the

bottom of Mt. Biokovo for safety reasons. After the big earthquake that destroyed many villages in this area, the locals moved closer to the sea. That is when this area started developing and turning to tourism. The past is recorded in an interesting regional collection that is kept at the so-called Museum of Legends. It is a retrospective of the lives of peasants and fishermen of this area. It displays old fishing tools, kitchen with utensils and dishes, captain's "tinel" (captain's quarters), musical instruments, carpenter tools and a small arboretum with some hundred plants from

all over the world that the sailors brought back from their travels (Semiramida's garden of the Andrijasevic family). The fact that these exotic plants can survive in this area is the evidence of mild climate and many sunny days. Pebble beaches that stretch for kilometers on end and are great for children, pine forest, the mighty Mt. Biokovo in the background, numerous hotels and apartments - that is Gradac. There are rarely any houses with one apartment. These are mostly villas with multiple apartments. To avoid the monotonous evenings, many events are organized in the summer. Holiday of St. Mihovil, the protector of Gradac, is celebrated on 29th of September. Gradac is also known for its "Summer Farewell" party, celebrating the last days of summer holidays, before the start of the new school year, with numerous musicians.
