A city on River Sava that has been constantly inhabited for 8000 years, since the Early Stone Age. In the Roman times it was known as Marsonia. It was first referred to as Brod in the 13th century. In the 16th century it was conquered by the Ottoman Empire and it remained under its rule for 150 years. It was re-conquered twice and in the 18th century a fortress was built that was defended by 4000 soldiers and 150 cannons. In the 19th century it was declared a Free Royal City. It changed its name into Slavonski Brod when it joined the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. With sixty thousand inhabitants, it is the

administrative, cultural and economic centre of Brod-Posavina County. It has 2 high schools, 6 vocational schools, College, University with the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Faculty of Education. Agriculture, viticulture, fruit growing, metal processing, wood processing, construction, textile, leather and food industries are all developed in Slavonski Brod. The sites that should be mentioned certainly include Brod Fortress, Theatre-Concert Hall Ivana Brlic-Mazuranic, Brlic Family House, old City Magistrate - Brod Posavlje Museum, Franciscan Monastery and Church of the Holy Trinity.
